The Story of Baidyanath Dham
Deoghar (“House of the Gods”, from Deva + Ghar) has been sacred since antiquity. The Shiva Purana names Vaidyanath as the 9th Jyotirlinga and recounts the legend of how the deity came to manifest here: Ravana, the king of Lanka, performed such intense penances on Mount Kailash that Shiva granted him ten boons. As Ravana attempted to carry a Shivalinga to Lanka as his prize, Shiva appeared in the form of Vaidyanath (the Divine Physician), and the Linga became fixed at Deoghar, unable to be moved. The spot where it manifested became the 9th Jyotirlinga.
