Swayambhu: Self-Manifested

By tradition, each Jyotirlinga is revered as a swayambhu (self-manifested) Shivalinga rather than one carved by human hands, directly manifesting Shiva's divine light (jyoti) rather than representing it.

Liberation in One Lifetime

In devotional tradition, visiting all 12 Jyotirlingas in one's lifetime is considered equivalent to gaining moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death), and even a single Jyotirlinga darshan is held to wash away lifetimes of karma.

Across All of India

Spanning 8 states and all four directions, from Somnath on the Arabian Sea coast to Rameshwaram on the far southern coast, the 12 Jyotirlingas together form a sacred geography of Shiva's presence across the subcontinent.

Ancient Beyond Record

The earliest Jyotirlinga sites are mentioned in the Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, and Linga Purana. Many have been revered for well over a thousand years, though several present-day temple structures were rebuilt more recently. Somnath, famously, was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries.
