The Story of Rameshwaram
According to the Ramayana and temple tradition, after the battle of Lanka, Lord Rama was advised by sages that killing Ravana (a great Brahmin scholar and Shiva devotee) required atonement through Shiva worship. Rama sent Hanuman to bring a Shivalinga from Kashi, but when the auspicious hour for the consecration arrived and Hanuman had not returned, Sita fashioned a Shivalinga from the island's sand herself. Rama installed it and began his worship. When Hanuman returned with the Kashi linga, Rama honoured his devotion by placing it beside the original and declaring that it (now called Kashilingam) should be worshipped first before the main Shivalinga. Both lingas remain in the temple today. Lord Shiva appeared, blessed Rama, and declared this spot a seat of eternal divine grace, naming it Ramanathaswamy, “the Lord who is Rama's God.”
The temple as it stands today is one of the finest examples of Dravidian architecture. The famous corridors were built and expanded mainly by the Nayak rulers and the Sethupathi kings of Ramanathapuram between the 12th and 18th centuries. The fourth prakaram (outermost corridor), added in the 17th century, stretches over 1,200 metres and is the longest colonnade of any Hindu temple in the world. The temple was significantly expanded by the Sethupathi kings, its medieval patrons. The Pamban rail bridge (India's first sea bridge) was built later, in 1914, by the colonial railways, greatly easing pilgrim access to the island.
