The Story of Tirumala
The Tirumala hills (the Seshachalam range) are considered the earthly abode of Lord Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu). Temple inscriptions trace active worship to the 9th century CE, though Puranic tradition holds the site as eternally sacred. The Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagara kings successively expanded the temple complex; the Ananda Nilayam vimanam (main tower) in its current form dates to the Vijayanagara period (14th–17th century CE).
TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) took over the temple administration in 1933 under the T.T. Devasthanams Act. Its current governance follows the Andhra Pradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act of 1987. TTD's official management page says it maintains 12 temples and their sub-shrines and employs about 14,000 people. It also runs pilgrim, education, health and free-meal services.
