Swami Haridas Ji, Nidhivan & the Singing That Manifested God
The deity Banke Bihari Ji is inseparable from Swami Haridas Ji (c.1512–1607), one of the most revered saint-poets of the Braj devotional tradition. According to tradition, Swami Haridas Ji lived at Nidhivan (the sacred forest in Vrindavan) and worshipped through singing alone. So absorbed was he in devotional bhajan that Krishna and Radha themselves manifested from the grove as a radiant image: the black stone (Syama Shila) idol now known as Banke Bihari Ji. This manifestation is considered a swayambhu (self-manifested) deity. Swami Haridas Ji was the musical guru of Tansen, the legendary court musician of Emperor Akbar, one of the few points where medieval Mughal court history and Vaishnava devotional tradition directly intersect.
For generations the deity was worshipped at Nidhivan before the present Mandir was built in Vrindavan in the nineteenth century. Worship is managed by the Mandir's sewa adhikaris. The current official timetable includes Shringar Aarti and aarti at the close of each session, alongside the parda-darshan tradition.
