The Journey Begins 41 Days Before You Arrive
Sabarimala is traditionally approached as a period of preparation as well as a temple visit. Many pilgrims observe a 41-day vratham under the guidance of a Guruswami before travelling.
Begin the Vratham
Many pilgrims take guidance from a Guruswami, wear black or dark-blue clothing and a tulasi or rudraksha mala, and begin a period of devotional discipline.
Observe the Devotional Routine
Traditional observance includes vegetarian food, prayer, self-discipline and avoiding alcohol. Practices can vary by community and Guruswami.
Prepare the Irumudi
