The 1801 Idol and Mumbai's Living Ganesha Tradition
The Siddhivinayak Temple was built in 1801 by Deubai Patil. Temple tradition connects her patronage with a prayer that other women might receive the blessing of children. The original shrine was modest and housed the black-stone Ganesha idol with its trunk curving to the right.
The temple was substantially rebuilt in the late twentieth century and now has a multi-storey structure and gold-plated dome. The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir Nyas manages worship, visitor services and charitable activities. Current financial figures are not needed for planning a visit and have been omitted here.
